After nearly 40 years, the grand old lady „disco“ still didn’t lose anything of her musical

power and still has her fixed place in all facets of electronic dance music. Among other things,

this movie will be leading back to the beginnings of this very musical movement and will compare

its audience, dancing, ecstasy and intensity of the last four decades. The film’s purpose is to portray

how the meaning of an entire culture has changed, and how a part of the underground movement

became a commercial mass phenomenon.

And We Danced will document in an honest way electrifying moments of all musical periods,

from the minority culture disco in the New York’s 70ies and its legendary clubs and one-off parties

to a reactivation of the disco style in the house music between Chicago and New York during the

middle and late 80ies. Starting with the highly creative output of the disco era it will also have a look

at a more and more short-term fascination of the fast moving and well-versed business of today.

Pathbreaking and well chosen DJs, music producers and scene activists will describe how the acid house

wave spilled over to Europe by the end of the 80ies and which unique impact the garage house revival

of the 90ies had in the US, Europe and especially in Germany. With the aid of new interviews,

contemporary shots, flyers, photographs, archive footage and last but not least the dance tracks

themselves [presenting and representing the soundtrack of a new culture], the viewer will also

experience the story of French Touch during the late middle of the 90ies up to its descendent

French Kiss and the multi-plural club music of today, as well as the new hype of

re-edits of old originals.

And We Danced is addressed to all those, who wish to live through the emotions of

the old days a second time as well as to all later generations, who happened to experience this

music and all its variations much afterward.

Despite the obviously existing innovation of all musical adjustment of borders, intermixture

of styles und the technically unlimited possibilities, one thing remains unmatched: the event disco

with its simplicity and ease, as it is hardly to imagine without. Also the absolute devotion to this vanguard

music as an attitude to life. With a touch of nostalgia and melancholy, the story of a culture will be told,

which indeed changed over the years but still has one thing in common: as long as it makes you dance,

everything can be Disco - the style of music which started with secret underground parties and became

an independent music genre and an established location, where people came together to dance.

If they did not dance, it was no Disco, if they danced, it was.

"The day Disco dies is the day people stop dancing. And people aren't about to do that.
There will always be Disco in one form or another."

John Luongo at the 1978 National Disco Awards
